Cystic Fibrosis or A Comprehensive Guide for Parenting the ADHD Child

Cystic Fibrosis: A Guide for Patient and Family

Author: David Orenstein

Written by Dr. David Orenstein, director of one of the nation's leading CF centers, this one-of-a-kind guide offers clear explanations and real-world advice on cystic fibrosis and its management. Here you'll find practical and reassuring information on day-to-day concerns—school, travel, exercise, nutrition, medication—as well as on physiological effects, long-term issues, and prospects for a cure. Cystic Fibrosis offers straightforward answers to the questions most frequently asked by patients and families—what causes cystic fibrosis; how it affects body systems; what pharmacological, surgical, and physical therapies are most effective; what roles exercise, diet, and nutrition play; what complications can occur and how they can be managed; when and why a lung transplant should be considered; what psychological effect the disease has on the patient's family; and how the special needs and concerns of adult CF patients can be addressed. The Third Edition is updated and revised throughout.

Wayne M. Samuelson

This is the second edition of a book aimed at people affected by cystic fibrosis, including patients, family, friends, and health professionals. The purpose is to inform those affected by the disease of the latest developments and help them pursue a normal life. The book fills an important gap for patients and families in providing answers to key questions. Although the book is primarily directed toward patients and their families and friends, medical students and trainees in both pediatrics and adult medicine will find it very useful. Established practitioners who are entering the field of cystic fibrosis as caregivers will also find this to be a very valuable introduction. The book is supplemented by illustrations that are clear and easy to understand. They are appropriate to the subject matter and text. A brief bibliography of classic references is provided. The table of contents is complete and easy to follow. There is an extensive index that is very useful. Each chapter begins with a highlighted summary of information called ""The Basics."" These are the high points of each chapter, and represent the essential information in each section. This carefully constructed book incorporates the expertise of some of the leaders in the field of cystic fibrosis into an easy to read book that clearly and frankly discusses the major issues of living with cystic fibrosis. The book is aimed at patients and their families. However, trainees in internal medicine, family practice, and pediatrics will find this book very useful. It would be a good acquisition for the medical library of any center that deals with cystic fibrosis patients.

A Comprehensive Guide for Parenting the ADHD Child

Author: Paul Lavin Ph D

ADHD children have problems concentrating, completing home and school assignments, and controlling impulsively. Moreover, these youngsters have a poor self-concept and are often depressed, anxious, and easily frustrated. A Comprehensive Guide for Parenting the ADHD Child provides parents, educators, and mental health professionals with a combination of research-based, field-tested strategies that can be used to help them to overcome these difficulties. The research shows that medication combined with behavioral, cognitive, and educational methods is the most effective approach in treating ADHD. It is the non-medication approaches that are often overlooked or underutilized, however. The programs presented in this book are designed to train the child to concentrate, to complete assignments, and to plan ahead. It is the application of these psychologically and educationally based interventions that teach ADHD children to gain the self-control and confidence needed to face the many challenges confronting them.
