Family Guide to Emotional Wellness or Help for Worried Kids

Family Guide to Emotional Wellness

Author: Patrick Fanning

This invaluable guide is designed to help parents raise children who are able to handle their emotions, cope with stress, and take on new challenges. It also provides information about common problems, such as eating disorders and anxiety, aiding parents in recognizing troublesome symptoms and deciding when professional help is necessary.

Library Journal

Best-selling authors of numerous self-help titles (Self-Esteem, Couple Skills), Fanning and McKay attempt to fill the need for a readable, authoritative guide to emotional well-being. This book summarizes their work over the past 20 years and includes excerpts and adaptations from additional sources on topics such as interpersonal skills and parenting, relatively new pathologies like gambling and Internet addiction, and traditional psychiatric maladies like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The chapters vary in depth from "pep talks" to detailed exercises, self-questionnaires, and reviews of standard treatment protocols. The coverage of psychiatric medications may date quickly, but the well-written text is relatively jargon-free, so readers can apply the knowledge directly or use it to prepare for professional consultations. This unique, research-based compendium is highly recommended for consumer health collections, where it should be a worthy complement to similar works on physical illness.--Antoinette Brinkman, M.L.S., formerly with Southwest Indiana Mental Health Ctr., Evansville Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Help for Worried Kids: How Your Child Can Conquer Anxiety and Fear

Author: Cynthia G Last

Most childhood fears are nothing to worry about. But panic attacks, phobias, and persistent anxiety can darken a child's horizons and lead to disrupted sleep, lower grades, and missed opportunities to make friends and explore the world. Dr. Cynthia G. Last helps parents determine when a child's apprehension is cause for concern. Drawing on 25 years of clinical practice and research, she vividly illustrates the different forms that childhood anxiety can take and offers practical solutions specific to each. For example, Dr. Last shows how to schedule "worry time" to ease generalized anxiety, and explains why reassurance is often counterproductive for kids with obsessive-compulsive disorder. The book emphasizes strategies for preventing episodes before they begin, demonstrates how to intervene when one is in progress, and offers tips on how to keep anxiety from worsening as a child matures. Readers will learn to be consistent and encouraging as their child develops the confidence needed to face--and conquer--worries of every kind.

Publishers Weekly

Mixing case histories with clinical research, Last shows parents how to tell the difference between common childhood fears (e.g., monsters under the bed) and more serious psychological problems (e.g., separation anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder). The author, a clinical psychologist and expert on anxiety disorders, relies heavily on anecdotes from children suffering from anxiety disorders to illustrate the afflictions and how to handle them (in addition to the disorders mentioned earlier, Last also covers social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and specific phobias). While the sketches are well drawn, they are somewhat repetitive. The book is at its best when it offers parents "hands-on" information, such as the chart outlining ages when common childhood fears begin and another on the differences between children with anxiety disorders and children with ADHD. There is also valuable material on the connection between anxiety and physical symptoms such as headaches and stomach problems; the effects caffeine, sugar and environmental toxins can have on children; and the roles medical problems like allergies, asthma, hypothyroidism and diabetes can play in causing anxiety or making it worse. Concerned parents will find plenty of useful advice here for quelling their children's fears. (Jan. 23) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

These two books build on each other. Written by a clinical psychologist specializing in cognitive-behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders, Help for Worried Kids introduces the topic of childhood anxiety disorders. The text opens with a discussion of the causes of childhood anxiety, its many "faces," and how to identify an anxious child. The second part is dedicated to the disorders themselves, with each chapter offering an in-depth examination that includes prevention, diagnosis, personal narratives, and advice on helping children gain control over fear and anxiety. A good selection of resources, check lists, and worksheets rounds out the text. This book is geared to concerned parents looking for help in determining whether their child's uneasiness is reason for concern. In contrast, Worried No More is geared not only to parents but also to school and healthcare professionals; it reads like a training guide for those with a daily need to understand and help children experiencing serious anxiety. Clinical child psychologist Wagner has a unique approach to making cognitive-behavioral therapy applicable to youngsters. As in the first edition, she begins by identifying normal fears and anxieties and considering when they become problematic. She then addresses the most common anxiety problems and disorders, discussing causes, therapies, and medications and what parents can do to help. Finally, she expands the strategies beyond the family to what schools can do. This book considers challenges and strategies in detail, carefully addressing how a parent can develop a systematic and goal-directed approach with the school to implement an effective action plan for the child there. Though both books are recommended for public libraries, Wagner offers far more tools, practical and well researched, for effectively helping anxious children and is recommended for academic libraries as well.-Kari Ramstrom, MLIS, Plymouth, MN Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

A Fact-Filled Book for Coping with Parkinson’s Disease

Kirkus Reviews

A simple, sympathetic guide to coping with a progressive, disabling brain disorder. Physician Cram was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease ten years ago. Here he matches his personal experience with his experiences treating other patients with the disease, the result is real hope for good health. Cram is a firm believer in four elements to self-help: a positive attitude, information about the disease; partnership with a knowledgeable physician, and a willingness to take action, to do the things "that make you feel better, help slow the disability, and keep you as independent as possible for as long as possible." Thus, he first explains the disease: its hallmarks are trembling in the hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face; stiffness and rigidity of the limbs and torso; slowness of movement; and impaired balance and coordination. There are other possible symptoms, from depression to changes in speech. Cram goes on to explain the overall progression of the disease through five stages. The hope he offers is that early self-help and medication may delay or even prevent the later stages. He looks at length at emotional considerations, diet, exercise, and other lifestyle needs, as well as present and possible future medical treatments. Cram also is careful to include practical help and encouragement for caregivers. Kind, practical, and thorough, a valuable starting point.

Menopause Answer Book or The Management of Obesity and Related Disorders

Menopause Answer Book

Author: Marsha Lynn Speller

Estrogen is a powerful female hormone that protects women from many health risks. In menopause, estrogen levels decline and its protective qualities decline as well. At the same time, a lifetime of bad habits may begin to catch up with us, and our genetic predispositions to disease begin to surface. All this leads to a plethora of symptoms, some temporary, some chronic and some life-threatening.

The Menopause Answer Book allows women to carefully assess their own symptoms and then seek out the information and treatments that will be tailored to their own specific needs:
-- Find out if you’re at risk for diseases associated with menopause
-- Develop your Menopause Action Plan
-- Assess the pros and cons of Hormone Replacement Therapy
-- Find out what tests to request from your doctor
-- Find out how to get the attention and treatment that you need
-- Learn about important lifestyle changes to make right now

Women dealing with menopause and perimenopause are bombarded with information but often have a hard time figuring out what applies to them and how to choose between conflicting advice. The Menopause Answer Book is the must-have companion to the top-selling menopause books, which are informational but don’t help women tailor their treatment.

The Management of Obesity and Related Disorders

Author: Peter Kopelman

Management of Obesity and Related Disorders concentrates on the management, pharmacological and otherwise, of obesity and its related problems. Diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, hyperlipidemia and fibrinolytic abnormalities are all exacerbated by obesity, which is now epidemic in scale. Professor Peter Kopelman has assembled an international team of experts to discuss the problem of obesity and its related disorders. The first section of this practical guide discusses the varying management approaches of exercise, diet, behavior, pharmacology and surgery, while the second section concentrates on the management of the specific related disorders.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Jeffrey Marc Zigman, MD, PhD (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center)
Description: This is a review of obesity, its complications and associated disorders, and its treatment.
Purpose: In his preface, the editor states that he intends this book to be used by healthcare professionals as a manual for the management of obese and overweight individuals. These objectives certainly are worthy and a handbook that presents a concise and practical approach to the management of this disorder would be a worthwhile contribution and beneficial. This book partially meets the objectives.
Audience: According to the editor, this book is directed towards "physicians in training, general practitioners and other health care professionals interested in the successful management" of obesity and overweight. I believe that all three of these categories would find this book to be readable and useful. The editor is an expert in the field of obesity and is a credible authority.
Features: This book covers the complications, comorbidities, and management of obesity and overweight. The best parts about the book are the individual chapters on management (part II):each of these management chapters provides an equal balance of background and useful, practical approaches. The chapter on behavior therapy, in particular, outlines a complicated field in an understandable and practical manner. The book falls short of its goals, however, in that a practical approach is truly only presented in part II. Part I deals with complications of obesity, namely diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, haemostasis abnormalities, and respiratory complications. Although these chapters provide good background on these conditions, for the most part they do not provide any "ready-for-use" practical guidelines to treat those conditions. In addition, the figures in these latter chapters are confusing whether viewed alone or in the context of the accompanying text. If this book truly were to contain practical approaches to the management of overweight and obese individuals, then practical approaches to management of the comorbidities of overweight and obesity should also have been presented. In fact, I would recommend that readers skip the first half of the book, and just read part II.
Assessment: Part II of this book is an excellent, concise, clear, and useful manual for managing obesity and overweight. Unfortunately, Part I does not provide practical approaches to management of the comorbid conditions associated with obesity and overweight.
