Great Expectation: A Father's Diary

Author: Daniel Roch

In Great Expectation, Dan Roche gives a man's perspective on what it means to start and expand a family relatively later in life. Through a series of diary entries in turns humorous, angst ridden, and full of hope and joy, Roche describes his own thoughts and concerns during the nine months of his wife's pregnancy. With five years of parenting his irrepressible daughter Maeve under his belt, Roche, already forty-five years old, and his wife, Maura, face the prospect of another arrival and the myriad of emotions that come with a second child. From revelling in the joys of pregnancy such as Maura's delight at "having cleavage" and being able to eat whatever she desires; to assuaging the parental anxieties of choosing the right obstetrician, correcting the mistakes one made with the first child, and sending children to college in the future; to navigating the unforeseen, experiencing the unexpected death of a parent, and feeling trepidation toward the thought of having a son, Roche records his emotions with unusual candidness and intimacy. Reflecting on day-to-day events and their significance in his family’s life together, Roche wonders what he is getting himself into and how much deeper he can immerse himself into parenting. Together, he and his wife face the bittersweet intersections of death and new life, menace and hopefulness. With sincerity and a mature wit, Great Expectation stands as a wise recounting of nine months’ time, with all of its chaos and charms, and offers a fresh perspective for first-time and veteran parents alike.

The Longevity Factor: How Resveratrol and Red Wine Activate Genes for a Longer and Healthier Life

Author: Joseph Maroon

A groundbreaking examination of new scientific research that holds the secret to weight loss, increased strength, endurance, memory, and a healthier, longer life

In The Longevity Factor, noted neuroscientist and surgeon Joseph Maroon, M.D., offers the definitive look at recent scientific breakthroughs identifying a group of natural substances — including the much-publicized molecule resveratrol — that can actually activate a specific set of genes in humans that promote a longer, healthier life. These substances, which make red wine, dark chocolate, and green tea good for us, appear to stave off a wide array of age-related diseases and keep us feeling young and vital.

Resveratrol is the centerpiece of headline-making research being conducted at the Harvard Medical School and elsewhere. Only recently, however, have scientists discovered how to isolate resveratrol and concentrate it into an affordable and safe supplement. Already, more than 200 supplements featuring resveratrol have flooded the market, and there are countless more on the way. But which ones work best? What is a consumer to look for on the label? Since resveratrol is a natural substance, can you get enough of it through diet alone, or should you combine diet with a supplement? And what lies on the horizon from the pharmaceutical industry? All those questions and many more are answered in this immensely informative and practical book.

Joseph Maroon offers the first-ever inside look at the amazing research that has led to the discovery of resveratrol and similar substances with the miraculous ability to activate our own longevity genes. He also offers his own diet plan and sound,reader-friendly advice for living a longer, healthier, and more balanced life with or without supplements. The Longevity Factor promises to be the authoritative source for everyone who wants to know more about how we can shift from the current paradigm of aging to a disease-free golden age of health, longevity, and fitness.

Wild or Tell Me What to Eat to Help Prevent Colon Cancer

Wild: An Elemental Journey

Author: Jay Griffiths

In Wild, Jay Griffiths describes an extraordinary odyssey through wildernesses of earth, ice, water, and fire. A poetic consideration of the tender connection between human society and the wild, the book is by turns passionate, political, funny, and harrowing. It is also a journey into that greatest of uncharted lands-the wilderness of the mind-and Griffiths beautifully explores the language and symbolism that shape our experience of our own wildness.

Part travelogue, part manifesto for wildness as an essential character of life, Wild is a one-of-a-kind book from a one-of-a-kind author.

About the Author:
Jay Griffiths is the author of A Sideways Look at Time, winner of the 2003 Barnes & Noble Discover Award for nonfiction. Her writing has appeared in Utne, the London Review of Books, The Guardian, The Observer, The Ecologist, and Wild Earth.

The New York Times - Elizabeth Royte

The lesson of Wild is simple: Our bland consumer culture is not only killing any wildness within us, but also turning wilderness into suburbia. Millions of indigenous people are "in limbo," caught between nature and the city as corporations pursue their land, minerals and plants. Having lost knowledge of their land, adults become alcoholics, and 13-year-olds "careless with their one-dollar lives" sniff gas.

Publishers Weekly

In her second book (after A Sideways Look at Time) Griffiths narrates her seven-year exploration of the wildest places left on the globe-the Amazon rain forest, the Arctic and New Guinea, among others. The book is divided into five sections representing the "elements": earth, ice, water, fire and air. Her search for what remains wild is as much a linguistic and spiritual journey as it is a physical one, although she does take real risks, like drinking psychedelic ayahuasca infusions with shamans deep in the jungle. Griffiths's central thesis-that by developing and destroying our last wildernesses we are impoverishing our lives-is not an original one, but she brings fierce conviction and impressive scholarship to her work. Although Griffiths has great erudition and a real sensitivity to language, her ultraromantic perspective, in which civilization is always bad and nature always idyllic, lacks nuance. For someone so inspired by nature, Griffiths doesn't allow her observations to speak for themselves; instead, every event becomes another opportunity to condemn modern man. The lack of a narrative arc makes the book a collection of variations on a theme, and although Griffiths is a gifted writer, after 60 such essays, the mind starts to wander. (Jan.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Griffiths (A Sideways Look at Time), a freelance writer whose work has been seen in the London Review of Books, the Guardian, and the Ecologist (among other publications), has written an exhaustive and at times exhausting book on all things wild. She divides the text into six categories: "Earth" (jungle), "Ice" (polar regions), "Water" (sea), "Fire" (desert), "Air" (mountains), and "Mind" (internal). While her text is filled with some accounts of her worldly adventures in such regions as Amazonia, Nunavut, Indonesia, Australia, West Papua, and Mongolia, it is mostly a treatise on wilderness in general, with her take on its role in history, sociology, religion, and, yes, our human character. Although there are interesting facts-and more than a little etymology of words relating to forms of wildness-the text is also preachy, and Griffiths often comes off as pompous, self-absorbed, and pretentious. Furthermore, the book is laced with gratuitous vulgarity, which is a shame. An optional purchase.-Lee Arnold, Historical Soc. of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

An exuberant and erudite exploration of the meaning of wilderness and its place in our lives. Griffiths (A Sideways Look at Time, not reviewed) traveled over seven years to some of the world's wildest and most remote places seeking to understand how wildness expresses itself. She has categorized her journeys by the four elements-earth, water, fire and air-adding a fifth, ice, and concluding with a trip into the recesses of the human mind. The first chapter, "Wild Earth," is an expedition into the Amazon basin, where she becomes immersed not just in the physical wildness of nature but in the culture of the indigenous people. When shamans introduce her to the hallucinogenic drink ayahuasca, she feels herself being transformed into a jaguar, an experience she describes vividly. The next, "Wild Ice," takes her to Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic, where she lives among the Inuit and bears witness to the beauty of the land and the destruction by white newcomers of the native culture. In "Wild Water," she learns about the wildness of the ocean and the creatures in it from the Bajo people of Indonesia, sea gypsies who live on a small island off Sulawesi. The hot, dry Australian outback is the setting for "Wild Fire." There she lives among the Aboriginal people, comparing their spiritual understanding of the desert with the less felicitous attitudes of the white settlers. The highlands of West Papua are the setting for "Wild Air," and there she is again traveling with native guides through exceedingly rough country and climbing high mountains. In Griffiths's eyes, indigenous people are blessed with a wisdom and spirituality that the rest of us, herself excluded, just don't get; a persistenttheme is the harm done to the native people and their environment by intruding whites, especially Christian missionaries. Griffith's love for words and her skill in using them, her easy familiarity with a host of poets, novelists, naturalists and anthropologists, her openness to new experiences and her willingness to reveal so much of herself, make this a fascinating journey.

Younger by the Day: 365 Ways to Rejuvenate Your Body and Revitalize Your Spirit

Author: Victoria Moran

Inspiring advice and tips for the reversal of aging-mentally and physically-with the promise that readers will look and feel younger after one year's time.

"Wouldn't it be delicious if, even for a little while, I could age in reverse? What if I could short-circuit time and gravity and those psychopathic molecules that oxidize and make the years show up bigger than life? How great would it be if I could get absolution for the suntans and sundaes, the late nights and worrying I indulged in once upon a time, or two weeks ago Thursday?"

With a resounding "Yes!" Victoria Moran's Younger by the Day: An Enlightened Guide to Aging in Reverse, Inside & Out, One Day at a Time, answers these questions and details the physical habits, mental attitudes, and spiritual disciplines that make this not just a lovely dream, but a dream come true.

While we believe we're worried about gray roots and smile lines, the truth is that we're really worried about what these represent: loss of identity, diminished regard from the culture at large, and less time to make the rest of our dreams come true. Younger by the Day does not gloss over this inner angst. Instead, it meets it-with empathy, compassion, humor, and immediately usable information from West and East, medicine and metaphysics. At the end of a year, the reader will look and feel like a younger woman. This book can deliver that promise. One might think of it as Simple Abundance for middle-age: designed to be used over a year's time, directed to women, and coming straight from the heart.

Younger by the Day is light, friendly, honest and witty. More importantly, it's both a practical guide to the adventure of growing younger and an inspiring companion for the journey. While many of the books are written by physicians or models, Victoria is much more like the reader herself. She's a big sister, a best friend, and she knows what it's like to be afraid of entering a new phase of life, has overcome those fears, and looks substantially younger because of it. The reader benefits from Victoria's experience with 365 select techniques to help her love her age instead of look it.

My Mothers Wedding Dress or The New Glucose Revolution Pocket Guide to Healthy Kids

My Mother's Wedding Dress: The Life and Afterlife of Clothes

Author: Justine Picardi

A glorious meditation on why clothes matter.

Beginning with the story of her mother’s wedding dress, a perfect black French cocktail dress bought in 1960, writer and former Vogue editor Justine Picardie affirms what all of us may have suspected: that the real value of our wardrobes lies in the history and associations woven into our clothes. Combining tales of her own family and friends, intimate stories from the fashion business, and reflections on clothes in literature and pop culture, Picardie uncovers the truths that lie underneath what we wear. She reflects on the strange disappearance of garments we love; the allure of uniforms; the house that Chanel built; the bridal and ghostly qualities of women in white; the fate of a ring belonging to Charlotte Brontë; the power of scarlet clothing; how Donatella Versace, Karl Lagerfeld, and Claude Montana dress themselves; and how the clothes we inherit from loved ones link us to the departed. Rich with fascinating stories from the public and private worlds of fashion, My Mother’s Wedding Dress is a gorgeously written book about what clothes cover up, and what they reveal.

The New York Times - Sarah Churchwell

In a sense, Picardie's book is about what constitutes a throwaway: it's about what we keep and what we lose; it's about perishability.

Publishers Weekly

A former British Vogue editor turned novelist (Wish I May) offers a stylish treatment of the significance of clothes to their owners and admirers. A black wedding dress belonging to Picardie's mother circa 1960 became the author's perfect little black dress 20 years later and serves as the elegant entr e to Picardie's narrative. Picardie devotes a chapter to each item: the wedding dress, cast off by her divorced mum, was added to the author's secondhand college wardrobe, a "rag-tag bundle of other people's identities"; a pair of plastic trousers, purchased in 1977, signified a transitory rebellion; a velvet jacket belonging to various relatives segues into a meditation on the frustrating elements of the unfinished story. Most poignant is the author's exploration of haunted clothing, seen in literary examples from Daphne du Maurier and Elizabeth Bowen, and exemplified in clothing favored by her terminally ill sister and abandoned in death. Picardie is amusingly digressive, moving from a discourse on the Gap's ability to bridge fashion and functionality to Zelda Fitzgerald's clothing memory as a grasp of her dwindling sanity. Picardie is also a terrific journalist, offering a shimmering chapter on the profane and sacred aspects of "scarlet women" and sharp interviews with Donnatella Versace and Karl Lagerfeld. (May 1) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Former British Vogue editor Picardie (If the Spirit Moves You: Life and Love After Death) has written a penetrating and absorbing book about the meaning of clothes in relation to their owners' memories and personal histories. Each chapter focuses on a particular item of clothing, a symbolic aspect of clothing (e.g., color), or a person (e.g., a designer). Some chapters are quite personal, such as those in which Picardie associates certain items with her deceased sister or reminisces about the black wedding dress of the book's title, which she had incorporated into her college wardrobe. Others, like those on the colors white and red, ponder the symbolic associations of color to clothes and examine the attire of fictional and historical characters. There was the white dress worn by the reclusive Emily Dickinson, the sinister white of C.S. Lewis's White Witch and Hans Christian Andersen's Snow Queen, and the contrast of the scarlet red of adulteresses with the blood red of religious martyrs. Also interesting are interviews with designers Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace. This engaging book is recommended for general collections as well as libraries collecting books on fashion.-Sandra Rothenberg, Framingham State Coll. Author: Dale Pendell

"Dale Pendell reactivates the ancient connection between the bardic poet and the shaman."-Terence McKenna

In Pharmako/Dynamis, Dale Pendell continues his exploration of psychoactive plants begun in Pharmako/Poeia. Pharmacognosy is the study of the composition, production, use, and history of drugs of natural origin. Pendell covers these topics and more in this volume, charting a voyage around the world of plant teachers. Through poetry, chemistry, and a generous sprinkling of arcane lore, Pendell weaves and twists the many threads of tradition into a singularly bewitching brew. Pendell's voyage is a true circumnavigation. It divulges what Gary Synder called "dangerous knowledge" that is a formidable weapon against "even more dangerous ignorance."

Dale Pendell is a poet, software engineer, and longtime student of ethnobotany. His poetry has appeared in many journals, and he was the founding editor of KUKSU: Journal of Backcountry Writing. He has led workshops on ethnobotany and ethnopoetics for the Naropa Institute and the Botanical Preservation Corps.

Balancing Your Body: A Self-Help Approach to Rolfing Movement

Author: Mary Bond

BODYWORK / HEALTH

"One of the most interesting and useful self-help books available."
--Massage Magazine

Going beyond good posture and movement efficiency, Mary Bond presents a unique self-help program of body transformation. Much of what we experience as physical tension or stress is the result of an imbalanced body. When our physical structure is habitually bent, twisted, and compressed, the body glues itself together with tension in order to remain upright. Bond demonstrates how the connective tissue that holds our bodies together is actually very flexible and will, with encouragement, adapt to new, healthy patterns of posture and movement.

Rolfing Movement combines touch and verbal messages to help you become more responsive to your body's inner cues. The author offers a practical series of structural awareness exercises that will help you redirect your awareness to internal sensations of tension or balance. These movement explorations are written as scripts so that you can practice the movements with detailed directions. By learning to recognize and respond appropriately to your body's internal messages, you will discover a new freedom of expression in your body, leading to a marked increase in health and vitality.

MARY BOND has a master's degree in dance from UCLA. She trained with Dr. Ida P. Rolf and is a certified Rolfer and Rolfing Movement teacher. Creator of the companion audiocassette, Balancing Your Body, she is also the author of numerous articles on bodywork and posture.

Mary Bond has a Master’s degree in dance from UCLA and trained with Dr. Ida P. Rolf as a Structural Integration practitioner. A Taste Berry Teens Guide to Managing the Stress and Pressures of Life or What to Eat

A Taste Berry Teen's Guide to Managing the Stress and Pressures of Life

Author: Bettie B Youngs

Like its predecessors in this phenomenal series, this new addition tacklesthe pressures of being a teen through a combination of stories and compassionate wisdom provided by the mother/daughter team of Bettie and Jennifer Youngs.

In A Taste-Berry Teen's Guide to Managing the Stress and Pressures of Life, teens will learn how to:

  • Understand what stress is-and isn't
  • Examine how they respond to stressful situations and how effective it is
  • Determine how stress affects their physical and emotional behavior
  • Minimize stress and stay cool under pressure through some terrific (and time-tested) intervention and prevention strategies
  • Get through stressful situations and use them to their advantage.

Stories written by teens demonstrate the issues that are a source of stress for them, including schoolwork, dating, moving, parents' divorce, weight problems and sexual identity. To cope with these problems, the author suggests three skills for helping teens "think" their way through stressful times. Practical stress-busting techniques are also provided in each chapter.

A Taste-Berry Teen's Guide to Managing the Stress and Pressures of Life is sure to be the next big success in this extraordinary teen series.

VOYA

This fifth book in the Taste-Berry series, a Chicken Soup look-alike, is a mixed bag. It provides clear guidelines on the nature of stress, what causes it, how to identify it, and how to cope with it. It advises wisely, "While you can't always control or change the event, how you respond is under your control." The format, however, is confusing. Seventeen appealing teen-written personal-experience essays appear up front, followed by chapters of various lengths containing didactic instructional material, miscellaneous worksheets, and teen essays sandwiched in. Unless a reader has a compelling interest in stress, he or she is apt to skip the instruction, pick out the few essays, and close the book. The chapters are organized into seven parts covering stress particular to teens, understanding the many personalities of stress, coping skills, and more. There is an epilogue, a list of suggested resources including hot line numbers, and a reading list, but no Web sites. The authors urge clean living, drug avoidance, and positive thinking to manage stress: "Make a decision to see life from the cup half-full point of view." Despite the liberal use of terms chosen for teen identification—teenville, joggin' your noggin, and the land of Overwhelm—the book, although not blatantly preachy, is teachy. Liberally funded libraries where mental self-help or Taste-Berry books are popular might find this guide a worthwhile purchase. Further Reading. KLIATT

The popular mother/daughter team of Bettie B. Youngs, PhD, EdD, and Jennifer Leigh Youngs author this interactive book that is augmented by personal contributions from teens themselves. The integration of these experiences and observations of their peers creates a comfortably familiar common ground that can make it an appealing read for YAs through the senior high school level. Young persons are also provided with the valuable opportunity to put their emotions into visible, addressable, b/w order by filling in their own personal responses to the presented situational questions on the blank lines provided on those pages. Divided into seven parts, this book begins with "Teen Talk," where firsthand accounts from YAs serve to introduce some of the major issues that are stressing them today. It follows with divisions that define stress, relate reactions to stress, teach verbal and mental coping skills, and present the positive potential to be found in support systems. It concludes with a look at the contributing value of sleep, nutrition, and the use of relaxation skills in a final prevention and intervention section. Selections of titles for further reading as well as toll-free phone numbers for suggested resource groups are included at the back of the book. No index is provided, but the detailed subject breakdown and page listings in the Contents allow for some ease of referencing. An excellent selection for public, school, and personal library. What to Eat: The Ten Things You Really Need to Know to Eat Well and Be Healthy!

Author: Luise Light

A research-based alternative to the USDA's food guide that cuts through the confusion of fad diets and big food lobbies

What should I eat?" If you're a health-conscious consumer, this is one of the hardest questions you face. Now this no-nonsense nutrition guide from former USDA nutrition director Luise Light offers a basic, balanced, and user-friendly food plan that cuts through the confusion and controversy of the latest fad diets, federal guidelines, and big food lobbies. Its ten simple rules are also adapted for a wide variety of nutritional needs--including weight loss, fibromyalgia, diabetes, and gastrointestinal disorders.

Luise Light, M.S., Ed.D., is a former director of dietary guidance and nutrition education research at the USDA. She has worked on nutrition programs with the Red Cross, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society.

Library Journal

Forty years ago, everyone knew that eating healthy meant consuming balanced portions from each of the four food groups and cutting calories to lose weight. Today, we have a food pyramid with steps running up one side; the supermarkets are crammed with low-fat, low-carb, low-sugar concoctions; and yet we as a country are fatter than ever. What happened? These two books try to cut through the confusion to map out the basic facts of human nutrition and weight control. Dietitian Zied (spokesperson, American Dietetic Assn.) and science writer Winter (A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients) take a scientific approach, explaining the new U.S. dietary guidelines and demonstrating how the revised food pyramid can be adapted for each individual. Tables show age and activity levels for determining one's optimal caloric intake, and different foods are analyzed for the development of a personal menu plan. Light (former director, USDA Dietary Guidance & Nutrition Education Research), on the other hand, forgoes the technical stuff, opting instead for a flexible diet and exercise schedule. She also realistically addresses eating out and on the run. Both books include menus and recipes, and both provide useful tips for trimming empty calories from one's intake. Both emphasize the necessity of exercise, but neither mandates specific activities. Either would be a good choice for public libraries, depending on the education level of their clientele.-Susan B. Nutrition and HIV or New 8 Week Cholesterol Cure

Nutrition and HIV: A New Model for Treatment

Author: Mary Romeyn

Treating HIV with Nutrition

Nutrition and HIV addresses the issues of nutrition and HIV from the perspective of the patient as well as the physician. Everyone who is interested in the problems of--and solutions to--nutritional therapy in HIV owes it to themselves to read this book.
--Paul A. Volberding, M.D., director, Center for AIDS Research, San Francisco

This reference book offers a sound nutritional model for sustaining and improving quality of life for HIV positive men and women. It outlines an easy-to-follow program for the prevention and treatment of weight loss--a common problem that if left untreated could lead to serious health decline or even death.

Publishers Weekly

Romeyn, a San Francisco internist specializing in HIV and nutrition, posits wasting, or starvation from within, as the enemy in opposing the advance of HIV infection. Already a grandmother when she began her internship in 1988, Romeyn exhibits here a remarkable combination of compassion, common sense and expertise. She explains clearly how HIV infection promotes wasting and why maintaining lean body mass is essential. She provides a self-help program for monitoring one's condition, improving one's appetite, taking the necessary supplements and dealing with special problems. A strong patient advocate and a proponent of aggressive and early treatment, she offers advice on the therapies currently available for fighting both the virus and secondary infections, choosing a doctor and a health-care plan, getting into new drug trials and using computer sources of information. Ten appendixes and a glossary pack in additional useful information. Although its focus is on nutrition, this is a truly comprehensive guide to combatting the ravages of HIV infection. (Oct.)

Library Journal

Romeyn, a San Francisco-based internist and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, states that "HIV is a disease of decreasing nutritional status." Through the loss of nutrients and weight, the body loses the ability to fight off AIDS or opportunistic infectors. Her book arms HIV+ individuals with the knowledge to monitor and control their own nutritional status aggressively and thus maintain better health. Romeyn explains how individuals can perform their own nutritional assessment and preserve body mass through supplements and careful eating habits. Charts, recommendations, and scientific references are included. Special problems, medicines, lifestyle suggestions, and social support for the HIV+ individual are incorporated throughout the text. Although written for the highly educated reader, this book is readable and packed with useful information. Recommended for all health libraries serving HIV+ populations.-Janet M. Schneider, James A. New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure: The Ultimate Program for Preventing Heart Disease

Author: Robert E Kowalski

Much has happened in the years since 1987 when The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure changed the way Americans think about coronary heart disease. And while cholesterol is still a risk factor for heart disease, the story is more complex than we once thought. In this completely updated book, Robert Kowalski reveals the latest developments in what we now know about heart disease and tells how to effectively combat all the newly discovered risk factors, from homocysteine to the deadly cholesterol Lp (a). He explains why diet is not enough and when supplements must be used, showing how optimal cholesterol levels can be reached without prescription drugs.

Kowalski, who had bypass surgery of his own in 1984, has effectively beaten heart disease by practicing what he preaches. He requires no prescription drugs, lives an unlimited and rigorous lifestyle, enjoys foods like steak and eggs, and has been given a clean bill of health by his physician. Included as well are new cholesterol testing methods; new heart-healthy products; special considerations for women, children, and the elderly; and new recipes.

Library Journal

Since this book first appeared in 1987, scientists have learned much more about cholesterol and its components, associated risk factors, supplements such as B vitamins and niacin, exercise, diet, and stress reduction, and longtime medical journalist Kowalski covers the evolving scientific information in depth. However, he also espouses an initially low-carb, low-calorie diet to induce ketosis and burn fat stores. That's fine for the short term in healthy individuals. But as with any significant change in diet, this one should not be undertaken without a physician's review since it may alter blood sugar levels in diabetics (and many folks have diabetes without realizing it) or require a change in medication levels. Meaning Medicine and Placebo Effect or Consumer Behavior in Fashion

Meaning, Medicine and Placebo Effect

Author: Daniel E Moerman

Traditionally, the effectiveness of medical treatments is attributed to specific elements, such as drugs or surgical procedures. However, many other factors can significantly effect the outcome. Drugs with nationally advertised names can work better than the same drug without the name. Inert drugs (placebos, dummies) often have dramatic effects on some patients and effects can vary greatly among different European countries where the "same" medical condition is understood differently. Daniel Moerman traverses a complex subject area in this detailed examination of medical variables. Since 1993, Cambridge Studies in Medical Anthropology has offered researchers and instructors monographs and edited collections of leading scholarship in one of the most lively and popular subfields of cultural and social anthropology. Beginning in 2002, the CSMA series presents theme booksworks that synthesize emerging scholarship from relatively new subfields or that reinterpret the literature of older ones. Designed as course material for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and for professionals in related areas (physicians, nurses, public health workers, and medical sociologists), these theme books will demonstrate how work in medical anthropology is carried out and convey the importance of a given topic for a wide variety of readers. About 160 pages in length, the theme books are not simply staid reviews of the literature. They are, instead, new ways of conceptualizing topics in medical anthropology that take advantage of current research and the growing edges of the field.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Marilyn Sample, B.S. and M.S.(Indiana State University)
Description: This book focuses on the emotional challenges that people with lymphedema encounter. It combines a narrative presentation of the information with some components one might see in a workbook.
Purpose: The author offers this as a complement to other books that primarily focus on the pathophysiology of lymphedema. In her practice as a clinical psychologist, the author encounters patients with various chronic conditions that cause many emotions to be manifested and needs to be met. In addition, she became personally interested in the condition of lymphedema because one of her relatives developed the condition. This book will help meet the learning needs of readers regarding the emotional challenges that patients with lymphedema experience, as well as their caregivers, significant others, and family members. This book also contains suggestions about how to cope with the emotions. This book certainly meets the author's objectives of providing a resource that can be used to understand the emotional challenges of these patients.
Audience: This book is written for anyone who is in the position of dealing with lymphedema -- patients as well as the healthcare professionals who care for them. The author also suggests that patients' significant others and family members can benefit from this resource and I concur.
Features: The focus of the book is on the varied emotional challenges that one may experience once diagnosed with lymphedema. The author presents chapters devoted to specific feeling states such as anger, anxiety, sadness, etc. This book isalso a resource for others who want to know about the emotional needs of these patients. In most chapters, the author has boxed areas that contain coping suggestions for a particular emotion. Also, most chapters have a worksheet which encourages readers to be more interactive with the written content. The book is well organized, and the information is presented at a level that is not too technical.
Assessment: A helpful appendix describes the pathophysiology of lymphedema. I think it is essential to have some understanding of the condition in order to be able to understand the emotional sequelae that may occur. The book is very well written, the information is organized in a logical manner, and the text is not too technical. Besides information about emotional challenges encountered by these patients, many suggestions and opportunities to take personal inventories are presented. This is a useful adjunct to other books about living with lymphedema.

Library Journal

From the restful pastel drawing on its cover to the comprehensive closing index, this book offers a refreshing and inspiring journey through understanding and coping with lymphedema, an accumulation of lymphatic fluids that causes swelling. While other authors cover the physical aspects of the condition, clinical psychologist McMahon (coauthor, Living Well with Lymphedema) takes the study to a more introspective, reflective, and ultimately supportive level. Using a workbook style, she begins with a section on the emotional challenges of lymphedema, then turns to a section on planning and setting goals for change, and continues with skill-building information and exercises to help think about, act on, and communicate that change. Each chapter features pauses for reflection and further study on the concepts and suggestions presented. Final chapters provide specific information and advice for friends, family, parents of children with lymphedema, and professionals in the medical and mental health fields. This book is not designed to be read through once; instead, readers will consult it frequently like a reference tool. Recommended for public libraries, consumer health libraries, and the resource collections of mental health professionals working in oncology.-Beth Hill, Univ. of Idaho Lib., Moscow Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Aformer physician at the Mayo clinic, Dr. Rolf Alexander became disenchanted with the limits of modern medicine and traveled around the world in search of healing techniques from other cultures.

Eat Right for Your Metabolism: How the Right Foods for Your Type Can Help You Lose Weight

Author: Felicia Drury Kliment

An easy-to-follow, customizable diet based on metabolic type that helps you get rid of excess fat and enjoy a healthy life

A diet that produces amazing results for someone else may fail miserably for you. Why? Researcher and nutritional consultant Felicia Drury Kliment explains that since people have different metabolic types, eating the wrong foods can lead to poor digestion, which causes weight gain and ill health. In Eat Right for Your Metabolism, you'll learn how to determine your metabolism type and customize a diet that helps you meet your goals for weight loss and long-lasting health.

Felicia Drury Kliment is a nutritional consultant in private practice and the author of the acclaimed book The Acid-Alkaline Balance Diet. Visit her website at www.eatrightforyourmetabolism.com.

Publishers Weekly

Kliment (The Acid-Alkaline Balance Diet) expands on her previous work to further pinpoint how the body's acid-alkaline balance, as well as issues regarding digestion, can disrupt metabolism, cause weight gain and initiate a series of other health concerns. The author purports that there are three main metabolism types-meat eaters, grain eaters and those with balanced metabolism-and that all can benefit from eating the right foods. To support her theories, Kliment cobbles together a mass of frequently unrelated medical studies, drawing conclusions about what they mean. In one instance, she links teens who drink milk, a theory that milk causes a growth spurt which in turn releases a growth hormone, and published medical research showing that taller people are at risk for certain cancers, to conclude that teens who drink milk are increasing their risk of cancer. In another instance, she suggests that eating cooked foods raises levels of stress hormones, "causing the body to produce more nutrients than it needs" which leads to "unwanted pounds." In addition to such examples, Kliment gives 26 recipes and a list of seven-day eating plans. Although her suggestions may resonate with some, in general, the book lacks cohesion, and its examples are too scattered to make real sense. (May) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Intrinsic Motivation and Self Determination in Exercise and Sport or FDA Regulatory Affairs

Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Exercise and Sport

Author: Martin S Hagger

The world of exercise and sport is fascinated by motivation and the factors that drive it. It's no wonder researchers-both in and out of the sport domain-will enthusiastically welcome Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Exercise and Sport.

Motivation is central to many social psychological theories that aim to explain behavior, including self-determination theory, one of the most influential theories of human motivation developed in the last three decades. Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Exercise and Sport examines the contribution of this theory to the understanding of motivation and behavior in the domains of exercise and sport. This is the first book to synthesize key research of self-determination theory as it relates to sport and exercise into one convenient volume. Written by a broad range of leading researchers, this reference will be a trend setter in the understanding of internal motivation and how to maximize performance and adherence. Furthermore, this volume will fill in research gaps, improve existing research, and set new directions for research in this vibrant area.

Self-determination theory is based on the premise that individuals pursue self-determined goals to satisfy their basic psychological needs to independently solve problems, interact socially, and master tasks. The book begins with an introductory chapter in which the founding fathers of self-determination theory, Edward L. Deci and Richard Ryan, provide an overview of the theory and its constituent subtheories and chart its history with respect to exercise and sport, highlighting classic studies and seminal works along the way. This introduction masterfullyprovides sufficient theoretical grounding and serves as an excellent prologue to subsequent chapters.

The remainder of the book is organized in two parts that cover research in the domains of exercise and sport. Part I examines the contribution of self-determination theory to the explanation of participation in and adherence to health-related exercise, and it examines the motivational experiences and contingencies that bring about exercise behavior and health-related outcomes. The recommendation sections that follow each chapter provide specialists interested in promoting exercise-including personal trainers, clinicians, health psychologists, and physical educators-with key strategies to motivate people to regularly participate in exercise for health.

Part II discusses the role that self-determination theory plays in explaining motivational processes involved in competitive sport contexts and summarizes the state of the literature concerning self-determination theory in diverse areas of sport, including athletes' motivation and sport performance, goal content and orientations, dropout, psychological well-being, and coaching behaviors. The recommendations outlined at the close of each chapter provide coaches, sport psychologists, sport promoters and managers, and physical educators with realistic, practical solutions to maximize sport performance, persistence in training, and, above all, enjoyment and well-being among athletes.

Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Exercise and Sport also integrates self-determination theory concepts with other theoretical frameworks to highlight the versatility of the theory and encourage future research. Each chapter in the text closes with clearly explained, in-depth suggestions for future research and for transferring findings into practice.

Whether you're a researcher in sport and exercise or in any other area where performance and adherence issues are key, Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Exercise and Sport will leave you inspired by the editors' and contributors' research and philosophy, brought together here to advance the knowledge of motivation in exercise and sport.

FDA Regulatory Affairs: A Guide for Prescription Drugs, Medical Devices, and Biologics

Author: Douglas J Pisano

This book covers the regulatory process for getting pharmaceuticals, biologics, and medical devices approved. It examines the pertinent aspects of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act as it applies to human drug and device development, research, manufacturing, and marketing. Topics include: the drug approval process, Current Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Clinical Practices, Quality System Compliance and the corresponding documentation requirements, and FDA inspection processes and enforcement options. Although many references exist on this subject, this one is written in a general prose style that makes it useful to both students and professionals.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: William Hirschhorn, MSc (Temple University School of Medicine)
Description: This is a comprehensive, well crafted book valuable for regulatory affairs professionals and those involved in the drug development process, as well as clinical trialists pursuing clinical research at the academic medical center level.
Purpose: The editors of this well written guide to the regulatory process for developing a new therapeutic product more than adequately achieve their goal of presenting strategies in a logical sequence.
Audience: This book would be beneficial for students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in clinical research, regulatory affairs, or clinical trial management. Of course, individuals entering the industry or transitioning from research to clinical development will surely find this book a welcome orientation to clinical trials.
Features: Of particular value are the chapters discussing the FDA and drug development from a regulatory perspective; the IND application process with a brief, but useful, overview of regulatory strategies; and the NDA with appropriate steps for formatting, assembling, and submitting the application. Additional chapters include an interesting overview of biologics. The FD&C Act is not easy to understand for those not well versed with the law. To this end, chapter 13 delivers an easy to understand orientation to laws, statutes, guidance, and policies that will help one navigate those uncharted waters. Of course, a book of this type would not be complete without a thorough discussion of good clinical practices and a description of every clinical investigator's commitment to the research process along with the protections afforded the human research participant. I would have liked to learn more about each of the contributors' affiliations and expertise to give this book the pedigree it deserves.
Assessment: There are several very good books currently on the market dealing with this same topic:with more looming on the horizon. This one will be a welcome addition to anyone's library, although at first glance, the steep cost might be an element of concern, especially for students. Once the reader examines it, however, the wealth of deliverable knowledge clearly offsets the concern about cost. This book is a must have.
